Book Description

Are humans meant to mate for life?

After four kids and an unfortunate but fateful end to her twenty-two-year marriage, Elsie Smith meets the new guy in town.

Kael Hendricks is … a little younger, a lot sexy, and too confident for his own good. He also doesn’t believe in marriage and all that goes with it.

And …

He’s just opened a new business that threatens the livelihood of Elsie’s family’s store–just in time for the holidays.

The problem?

There’s an undeniable attraction that leads to out of control situations, a loss of inhibitions, and a lot of small town gossip.

As Elsie tries to redefine herself and convince her family she isn’t having a midlife crisis, she’s forced to answer the biggest question of all …

Can she love an enemy who will never surrender?

Book Review

Not What I Expected by Jewel E. Ann is not what I expected from a romance.  There is a cute romance but also loss and the less positive side of relationships.

Not What I Expected starts with Elsie ending her marriage.  She tells her husbands all of the little reasons she is unhappy.  About a year later, Kael, a young attractive man opens a store across from Elsie’s family’s store that puts her business in jeopardy.  There is instant attraction between Elsie and Kael. What will happen between them? Will it be casual or more? Is Elsie ready to move on? What will her small town think if they find out?

Elsie is always in control and always looking out for her family and friends.  Suddenly, she starts to be selfish and do what she wants.  Elsie isn’t afraid to have honest, unpleasant conversations.  Elsie is my favorite character. She married so young that she never really got to do what she wanted.  Now that she is no longer married, she is free to do what she wants.  Kael is the new man in town and attractive so all the single women are interested in him. Kael doesn’t believe in marriage, so it is interesting to read why that is and what he wants.  Elsie and Kael are competitors.  Will their businesses effect what happens between them?

Not What I Expected is a great book.  There are so many different aspects to the story.  Not What I Expected talks about loss and grief.  The book discusses the concept of not sugarcoating everything about a person after they are gone.

Not What I Expected was my first book by Jewel E. Ann, and now I can’t wait to read all her other books.

Thank you Valentine PR & Literary Management and Jewel E. Ann for Not What I Expected.
